THE SECRET OF THE IDEAL FIRST LAYER

Autumn is here in full force. The sun and the wind are literally playing with us. Early in the morning, temperatures drop close to freezing, and in the afternoon, with a bit of sunshine, they can easily jump up to 10–13°C. The wind blows beautifully through the falling leaves—and through our hair as well. Every morning, we can ask ourselves the same question: what to wear so we stay warm, but don’t sweat when temperatures rise later in the day? And also so we don’t have to take off our base layer during the day at work or in other indoor spaces.

Everyone has different temperature needs, but quality underwear should always meet these three basic criteria:

1. IT MUST FIT PERFECTLY AND NOT RESTRICT MOVEMENT:

One of the main reasons to wear a base layer is to keep warm. That first layer should therefore fit your body like a second skin. That’s why not only the right cut matters, but also sufficient elasticity of the material. If the base layer is too loose, it won’t keep you warm properly, and additional clothing layers will bunch up over it. In general, a lower to medium fabric weight is more suitable for base-layer underwear.

2. FOR UNDERWEAR TO KEEP YOU WARM, IT SHOULD BE WARM WHERE YOU NEED IT:

Some people like to feel warm all over, while others prefer to protect and warm only certain sensitive areas—so they don’t end up feeling too hot overall. This is an important criterion to consider, because the most common issue with a base layer is that it warms you in the morning, but by noon you feel overheated. In that case, it’s better to choose a softer, more flexible material—or smart underwear with zoned warmth. If you want even warmth across the whole body, choose underwear made from a single material.

3. IT SHOULD WICK AWAY SWEAT EFFECTIVELY:

During the day, we do different activities and move through different temperatures, so it can happen that we sweat a little—for example when running for the bus or shopping in a well-heated store. That’s why it’s important for the material to move moisture away from the body for comfort and health, and to dry quickly.
